Lesion of areas 17/18/19: effects on the cat's performance in a binary detection task

The ability of two cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise — i.e. in a binary detection task — was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical areas 17, 18 and 19. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio. After a lesion of areas 17, 18 and 19 both cats were unable to carry out the discrimination tasks. Their detection performance dropped to chance level, but after an extensive phase of retraining (3 months) they regained the ability to discriminate visual patterns. Advances in the statistical methodology for the selection of image descriptors for visual pattern representation and classification

Recent advances in the statistical methodology for selecting optimal subsets of features (image descriptors) for visual pattern representation and classification are presented. The paper attempts to provide a guideline about which approach to choose with respect to the a priori knowledge of the problem. Two basic approaches are reviewed and the conditions under which they should be used are specified. References to more detailed material about each one of the methods are given and experimental results supporting the main conclusions are briefly outlined.

THE INFLUENCE OF TEXTURE SYMMETRY IN MARKER POINTING: EXPERIMENTING WITH HUMANS AND ALGORITHMS

Symmetry plays a fundamental role in aiding the visual system, to organize its environmental stimuli and to detect visual patterns of natural and artificial objects. Various kinds of symmetry exist, and we will discuss how internal symmetry due to textures influences the choice of direction in visual tasks. Two experiments are presented: the first, with human subjects, deals with the effect of textures on preferences for a pointing direction. The second emulates the performances obtained in the first through the use of an algorithm based on a physic metaphor. Results from both experiments are shown and comment.

Trends in pattern recognition

Aims of this paper are to present a short history of pattern recognition, its current areas of interest and future developments. The term pattern recognition is vague, its related topics including the study of sensorial stimuli, the analysis of physical phenomena and models of reasoning. Here we concentrate our attention on visual patterns and the machines that have been realized in order perform automatic pattern recognition. Some theoretical approaches will be also reviewed.

Symmetry operators in computer vision

Abstract Symmetry plays a remarkable role in perception problems. For example, peaks of brain activity are measured in correspondence with visual patterns showing symmetry . Relevance of symmetry in vision was already noted by Koler in 1929. Here, properties of a symmetry operator are reported and a new algorithm to measure local symmetries is proposed. Its performance is tested on segmentation of complex visual patterns and the classification of sparse images.

Visual Distraction Effects of In-Car Text Entry Methods

Three text entry methods were compared in a driving simulator study with 17 participants. Ninety-seven drivers’ occlusion distance (OD) data mapped on the test routes was used as a baseline to evaluate the methods’ visual distraction potential. Only the voice recognition-based text entry tasks passed the set verification criteria. Handwriting tasks were experienced as the most demanding and the voice recognition tasks as the least demanding.
